(Championships)
David Mundy won the Selectors' invitation cup at Surbiton yesterday. He beat Paul Castell in the best of three play-off. This almost maintained the tradition whereby the reserve wins the event (Paul was second reserve).
A three day flexible Swiss with the top four at tea time on Saturday going into a knock-out; single game semi-final and then best of three final.
Weather: sunny and mostly warm (we were protected from the northerly wind by the Surbiton massif; much sympathy for the tankers in Norfolk.)
Lawns: conducive; first outings for newly levelled lawns six and seven - both flat but bits of the surface need another 100 years of TLC.
Players: forgiving and agreeable
Beer: in truly excellent nick, especially the ESB
Food: have known better greasy spoon transport caffs.
In the semi-finals, David Mundy beat Samir Patel +5 and Paul Castell beat Swiss Champion Peter Payne +11TP. David won the final +24 -16TP +16.
A gold medal TP from Jenny Williams and a handicap reduction to 0. Her other contribution to the cultural life of the club was her insistence that the bar should stock "Tango".
