Two years ago the Henley-on-Thames Club sprang a surprise victory over their better known reciprocal Club friends in their debut in Inter Club Championship, and that still wrankles with some the London Club. And today very similar narrow winning margins were in evidence, showing just how well matched these two rivals are at GC team level. Raymond Wood and competition newcomer Mike Fensome lead the way from the number 3 & 4 berths for Phyllis Court with victories in all four of their singles rubbers but all was far from plain sailing. The final score-line of 5 rubbers to 2 hides the detail that, of the 17 games played, just two ended 7-4, four were 7-5 and no less that 11 went to the final hoop! With such repeated cliffhanger endings, reminiscent of Man City's Premier League title snatch the day before, the crowd of one man (with no ...

WCF Require Webmaster

WCF Webmaster The WCF is seeking a webmaster, with the necessary skills and experience to maintain and onward-develop the WCF's new Joomla-based website. Fittingly the sun shone on the competitors' whites - all to some extent adorned with pink, in recognition of the chosen charity: the Breast Cancer Campaign. £2500 was raised from the 358 players who contested heats and after adding in Gift Aid the charity will benefit by more than £3000. Handicaps ranged from -1.5 to +24 and for some this was a first ever tournament. Nonetheless we had a brisk start and were able to complete the fourth round of the swiss before lunch. At that point local player Keith Mackenzie-Ross (8) and John Knight (18) of Reigate (contesting his third final), were unbeaten, with eight others on just one loss - including two previous ...

Jon Diamond won the Tunbridge Wells GC Tournament

Jon Diamond from Tunbridge Wells won the Tunbridge Wells GC Tournament with 10 wins from 15 games. Jon also managed the tournament and ensured the fine weather as well as the cakes for tea. Following six weeks of what feels like continuous rain, the sun shone (mostly) on the select bunch of players who wended their way to Tunbridge Wells last weekend. Sadly, two of the three lawns were water-logged at the start of play, so it was a bit of a squeeze playing on one lawn for the first day. However, the lawns themselves were in great condition, if a little slower than the players would have liked. Everybody won at least six games, which shows how evenly matched the players were, but the surprise of the event was Duncan Cox, from Tunbridge Wells, who although having a handicap of 5 managed to win six of his 13 games against players with handicaps 1 and 2. In the morning session Carole McLoughlin and John Reynolds won a gritty doubles game +7 (on time), Roger Mayhew won a close fought game +1 (on time, Golden Hoop) and Suzanne Clarke lost -7 in a competitive and skilful game. Suzanne had barely started before her opponent had both his balls on Rover, just one hoop and peg for each short of victory. In an impressive display of determination and skill - especially as she has just spent a year away from the sport - she took her first ball round and pegged out one of her opponent's balls. She then proceeded to take her second ball round but unfortunately had to use her final bisque - which she had been saving to close out the game - when she admitted to her opponent that she had committed a fault. In the afternoon, John was comprehensively beaten -10. Roger won +5 on time with both players quite a way from ...

Ryde lost to Bear of Rodborough 2-5

Bear of Rodborouigh beat Ryde by 5 games to 2. Bear of Rodborough travelled to Ryde but the Ryde Club had problems with a team. The players would have been entirely different if it had taken place on Saturday because of the fund raising event "Walk the Wight" from Bembridge to the Needles in aid of the local hospice. Team "bandit" Harry Oldham (20) was not available, so Nick Minns now handicapped at 12 was brought out of retirement. Early Sunday morning the match itself started with Matthew Jackson and Richard Way up against the Ryde pair of Philip Kennerley and Chris Cockcroft. This went the distance with the home team ahead by 10 on time. In the meantime the Bear couple of Keith and Kate Apperley had beaten Ryde players Richard Harris and Nick Minns respectively making it 2 games to the visitors at lunch. With some catching up to do, Ryde did not start well in the afternoon. Chris Cockcroft went down to Richard Way by 15. There were no sextuples. There was no cast of 80 players from 10 countries - just the 9 Brits (although I suppose you could count the two embittered Yorkshiremen as a separate nation). There was no Aboriginal dancing, which was probably just as well, since seeing the inhabitants of Fulham prance about scantily clad might have put the players off their breakfast. And most notably, the 23 degree temperatures and bright sunshine over in Adelaide were replaced all weekend by leaden skies and rain varying from dribbling to driving and back again. Undaunted, a capacity field had assembled and while it didn't feel as though the winner would come from outside the four minus players, it was a good spread of players such that you felt that any player could beat any other on the right day. And so it proved, with the upsets beginning in round 1 as ...

Colchester beat Ramsgate 6-1

Ramsgate were always going to struggle, given the difference in handicaps, but they gave a spirited performance. The result was: Winner: Ryan Cabble: (Haste Cup); Runner-up: William Ormerod. As there was no court available, or time, for the play-off for 3rd & 4th positions there was a little concern regarding the points for these positions. Martin French stepped in and offered to manage the event, and 5 or 6 entrants were expected so an all-play-all was planned. In the end, 13 showed up, so the format switched to an Egyptian. The flexibility of this helped deal with Rob Fulford departing for the airport on Saturday afternoon, Jack Wicks having family commitments on the Sunday, and Martin Leach leaving early to hear his wife sing at Snape concert hall on the Sunday. The croquet was typically early-season. Good in parts, rather more errors than you'd expect, and people struggling with the pace on lawns that looked like they should be easy (but turned out to have quite variable pace). Nick Mounfield won the Egyptian - and so the Lexden Cup - winning all his games. Debbie Cornelius came second and saw her handicap improve to -1. Our efforts at Open Days, plus trying all sorts of advertising, PR, leaflet drops and the like, have proved truly abysmal. Our record, over the last 5 years, has been to attract an average of one - yes one - person to each initiative. The conversion to Membership ratio has been zero. We look enviously at the success of our friends at Cheltenham, whose Open Days bring in the crowds, and result in a very high conversion ratio into CCC Membership. At Edgbaston, we are good at Marketing, and hosting, "Corporate" evenings - mainly for the professional firms in Birmingham City Centre. This programme adds about 50% on to our Membership income. Happily, the evenings are popular with our Members too, who enjoy helping beginners and the general atmosphere of a "jolly". But zero conversions to Membership. 2012 has placed extra and unexpected pressure on Edgbaston's ...

Dave Nick beat James Hopgood to win the Southport Advanced Weekend

The final wasn't short of interactivity - Hopgood TPOed Nick in the first and reduced the game to two balls, before a late fightback. Three-times defending champion Jamie Burch (2009-2011), last year’s runner-up, Rutger Beijderwellen and past defending champion, Stephen Mulliner (2006-2008) were the other top seeds and all made it to the semi-finals. However, mention should also be made of Mark Fawcett, a recent addition to the home club after emigrating from London, who made his mark by taking the middle game off Rutger in their quarter-final. The WCF Management Committee staged its own internal contest when Martin French, Secretary-General, faced Stephen. It has to be reported that a certain lack of respect was displayed when one hit the other’s sextuple leave. Court conditions were a friendly 9-10 Plummers while the weather was breezy and climatically challenging with a wide variety of thermal overwear in evidence. Six World Championship Contenders were among 26 players who enjoyed easy conditions (43% of scores had 'letters') and the usual fine food and drink of Surbiton on Easter Sunday and Monday. In the flexible swiss there were plenty of games for those who wanted them and who played fast enough. The first day saw Rutger, Mark Avery, James Hopgood, Marcus Evans and a resurgent David Openshaw performing as expected, near the head of the leader board. However, the trophy holder, Samir Patel, initially disappointed and Jamie Burch - not in the Worlds squad - was clearly there for the long game, planning a later peak: possibly to win the Reigate Club Championship later in the season. Having said that, Jamie had the unusual distinction of either winning with a TP or losing to one in all of his nine games by the end of the event. The sensation of the tournament was not among these names. Sam Murray, a fast improver from the Surbiton ...

Jaimie Mussi won the Cheltenham Easter Handicap Tournament

Jaimie Mussi won the Cheltenham Easter Handicap Tournament in the knockout. The lawns were in excellent condition, running at around 11 seconds in bright and dry, but chilly, weather. However, all four managed to find themselves on the losing side of one of the day's matches leaving four players still in contention at tea. They were paired up on lawn 2 to provide the closing entertainment for the assembled crowd. Gary Bennett (0.5) took an eary ball to rover against John Reynolds (11) but John used his bisques well to complete a 12 hoop break, the rover peel and peg Gary out. By this stage, it had been worked out that while John could tie for the lead he would lose out in the tie-break so attention turned to the other match, between Mike Lambert (11) and Margaret Hampson (10). This was a tight affair which finished, as is the best tradition of handicap play, as dusk started to fall with a +1(t) scoreline in Mike's favour. Bernard Neal, the immediate past President, was congratulated on reaching his 90th Birthday and Colin Irwin, a Vice-President, on having narrowly survived a heart attack during a game in Florida. Formal business included the approval of the 2011 accounts, which showed a lower surplus, of £3K (implying an adjusted deficit of £5.5K) than anticipated, due to reductions in valuation of slow moving stock, requested by the Marian Hempsted, the Independent Examiner. The budget for 2012 was confirmed, which envisaged an adjusted deficit of £12K in the general fund, despite using the £6K of interest accumulated in the Duffield Bequest fund, and a similar deficit was predicted for 2013 unless subscription rates were raised. It was agreed to do so, for both clubs and individuals, broadly in line with inflation. The revision of the proposed Reserves Policy, requested by the January meeting, had been ...

Charity One-Ball for the Breast Cancer Campaign

Over 25 heats of the Charity One-Ball Championship are being held, estimated to raise over £2000 for the Breast Cancer Campaign. Most of the changes are for clarification, for example to identify those regulations that only apply to Association or to Golf Croquet, but not to both. The main change that is likely to affect UK-based players is that odd-numbered association handicaps above 12 are no longer accepted. This enforces a decision taken recently by the handicapping committee. The other changes are to correct a poorly worded regulation covering the use of bisques after time expires, to extend the "Super-Advanced" trial period, and to make it easier for overseas players to comply with tournament entry requirements. The full tournament regulations are available in the tournaments section of this website. The changes made since the 2011 edition are: T2b1 - Corrected to restore this regulation to its intended meaning H1a - Amendment so that players require an official handicap at the start of an ...

WCF Golf Croquet World Team Championship - Team selection schedule

The GC Selection Committee has agreed to the following schedule for team selection for the England team that will compete in the First Division of the Championship: players to declare their availability by Monday 18 June (the Selection Committee reserves the right to approach any players who have not declared their availability by this date and add any who wish to the list of available players) GC Selection Committee to announce the team selection on Monday 25 June (this date is immediately after the GC Open Championship and the Committee will take account of how players have performed in that Championship in determining the team selection) The First Division will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 26th November until 2nd December 2012.
