CA v Swiss CA

[<<] [>>] by Klim Seabright [^] -> bottom
5th/6th August 2006 (International)

Ian Price captained the CA representative side, which recently played the annual fixture against the Swiss CA. The last time that the fixture had been played within the much written about CERN complex near Geneva, the CA had suffered a rather ignominious defeat, well actually it was 19 -1! Paul Miles and David Hopkins were the other experienced members of the team whilst Klim Seabright was making his debut in a representative match. The team arrived on Friday to find that practice had been washed out. The glowering clouds from behind the Jura Mountains had tried to do their worst but the grounds man managed to complete a final mow of the lawns late in the evening. Paul Miles gave early warning that he was in good form, which he maintained throughout the week-end, only loosing in the final doubles match on Sunday afternoon. Ian and David played well but Klim got off to a somewhat nervy start. By thy end of the first day the away team were 6- 4 down and went off into Geneva to console themselves with the excellent Swiss hospitality supervised and led by Norman Eatough.

Seabright hit form the next morning (winning both his singles). He had ridden his luck well, after his opponent missed possibly the shortest peg-out ever seen, to go on and win his first an second singles. The CA went to lunch needing to win one of the two afternoon doubles matches. David Hopkins now hit a purple patch and, combining with Seabright's maintained form, managed to seal the rubber fairly quickly. It was however a close run result (9-11) and Ian gratefully received the trophy which had kindly been donated by the Swiss CA. A splendid week-end of good company, good competition and good food was enjoyed by all. The Man of the Match award (had there been one) would undoubtedly have been awarded to Paul Miles for his nearly perfect overall results.
