Sonoma WCC - Friday

[<<] [>>] by John T\ylor [^] -> bottom
18th May 2002 (International)

Just one game to go. The final will be played on Saturday afternoon.

A quick thanks to the tournament director Mike Orgill and our referee Tony Hall. Rosemarie and I assisted, and of course the entire week has been supported by employees from the Sonoma-Cutrer Winery and many Make-a-Wish volunteers. I'm sure I have overlooked a lot of people but they can be sure that we do appreciate their efforts.

You are probably wondering who won. Well the USA did well in the plate with Bob Cherry from Atlanta Georgia defeating Mik Mehas of California. England's Keith Aiton and New Zealand's Bruce Baker got to share the 3rd place.

Our boy Jacques Fournier had a go at South Africa's Reg Bamford but had to settle for 3rd place in the winners ladder. The Final will be between 3-time winner Robert Fulford from England and Reg who is trying real hard to improve his record this year. Reg has placed 9th, 8th, 6th three times, 3rd, and 2nd twice. He is after 1st place this year but I'm sure Rob has the same plan. When we began this tournament in 1986 we were very impressed with and carefully documented the 24 triple peels the players did. In 1987 when Graham Beale of New Zealand did the first ever sextuple peel on American soil he was awarded a large bottle of wine to acknowledge the accomplishment. The players sure have improved! Our stats for this tournament are 80 TPs, 8 QPs and 15 SPXs. With the SXP becoming so "common" I overheard one player say "That only the slow learners are still doing triples." I'll let you know how things turn out tomorrow. All games played at Sonoma-Cuter
