David Maugham won the Bowdon June Advanced Weekend

[<<] [>>] by Ian Lines at Bowdon Croquet Club [^] -> bottom
4 Jun 2017 (Level-Play Tournaments)

David Maugham won the Bowdon June Advanced Weekend, beating Paddy Chapman -26tp, +25tp, -14otp, +8, +17tp in the final. This ended Paddy's impressive run of 6 successive victories in this event since 2011. Both played well, with just a few errors in the match, but I think David hit one or two more shots. Paddy had a excellent finish off the contact in game 3, starting at hoop 5.

The earlier rounds of the knockout very much went with seeding.

The field was largely comprised of regulars, but it was good to see the return of Mark Suter, who won the consolation Egyptian with 6/7 wins including 4 tps. Mark's only close game was a +5 win against Ian Lines, where Mark almost had a qp and then hit two consecutive 16+ yard lifts. Mark is currently playing off -1.5 but it looks like he will soon progress to -2.

The lawns at Bowdon have largely recovered from the winter treatment with off-spec chemicals, and were playing OK, though still a little bobbly on the lower lawns. There had been a little rain so they weren't running at any more than a fairly easy 10 Plummers, but the hoops were well set by Barry Keen to a 1/32" to provide a reasonable challenge.

As always, the catering at Bowdon was excellent - arguably the best at any club in the world - thank you to Lorna and all the team at Bowdon. Alison Jones even provided bacon butties for Sunday morning.
