Forster (Aus) v Huneycutt (USA)

Please use this link to get to the end of the commentary.

Morning all, and welcome back to Roehampton for Day 3 of the Australia v. USA test. The test is tied at 3 matches all after the first two days of double. Six singles today, and in such a closely fought contest, if either team can take four or more of the six, they will be in a very strong position to win the test, only being whitewashed in the last round of doubles being able to prvent them taking a lead into the last day.

Although both these teams lost their first test, the winner of this test is still in with a realistic chance of winning the Shield, provided the team they lost to in the first series loses their second test. So Australia will be hoping for a narrow GB win over New Zealand to keep them in the hunt.

1 Y 9 yds N C4

2 U 12 yd W boundary tice ( a sensation!)

3 R misses tice to C2

4 K misses U, joining

5 R hits K from C2. Has trouble digging the balls out so ends up rushing Y to 3 from 20 yds, and clangs the hoop

6 U hits 18 yarder at Y from hoop 4. Makes hoop one of K and has a 4 ball break

Must say I was a little disappointed when I arrived this morning not to find the refershments table in the media centre groaning with cakes and sundry patisserie from you all. I've had a yack with the floor manager, who's gone of to investigate. But we strongly suspect they must be going astray in the club somewhere, so if you could all mark them clearly for my attention, I'm sure the problem will besolved

Meanwhile out of nowhere U fails to approach 3b from a yd behind and has to retire to C2. He'd prviously co;;ected all the balls at 3b for an NSL, and as he couldn't concoct a scatter, R, Y and K form a kind of 3 Ducks round 3b leave

Sorry about that, correction:

7 R makes it's slightly hampered roquet on K, rushes Y to 3 and is away on a 3 baller

Rushes Y to 1b after 5 and elects to dig U out of C2 now by rolling it to the peg going to hoop 6, rather than waiting to send it as his 2b pioneer before 1b

One of the things I like about the commentary system we are using is that yo can go back and edit comments after the event. So if you return to this commentary tomorrow morning, you'll find no trace of the preceding clip reporting error. Very 1984

As rain increases in volume, R completes its voyage to 4b with a spread

Clips

No need for Big Brother's assistance there then

8 K, the peg ball, misses the long lift into C4

9 Y runs 1 from 6" dead in front, but fails to get a rush to C4 by over hitting it. Taps U and rolls it to 3 going to 2

Rushes R to near 4 after 2, adjusts it going to K in C4, but declines the big roll to 3 and just takes off. So the tp will be delayed

Rushes back to 4b after 4 accutrately enough to jaws the 4b peel. Russhes the escape ball to 6 and takes off to 5

Sets up for Wylie method for penult peel at 6, but doesn't get a N bound rush after running the hoop. Opts to Willock the 2b pioneer, so has to do a 20 yard take off back to the peelee. No rush on that, and speculative 6 yd peel attempt bounces 1 ft to the E of the hoop

Death roll going to 3b peels through to 5 yds SSE of rover

Irsishes rover peel 7yds through. Finishes

Forster lost to Hyneycutt -18tp

1 K to E boundary 7 yds N of C4

2 Y to E boundary 15 yds S of C3. Not sure I understand this, will have to ask later

3 U makes double from B baulk and hits K. Takes off but doesn't get a rush on Y to 1, so punts it across 5 yds S of 2 and joins up

4 R misses Y from B baulk to peg high on W boundary

5 U rushes near Y, puts K to 2 and rushes Y to R. Makes 1 and he's away with a 4 ball break

Pops Y through 1 going to K at 5

Doesn't get any more pops, so ends at 4b with an NSL, R on 4 and Y on W boundary level with 2

Clips
4b 1 1 1

6 Lifts R and misses the long shot into C4

7 K rushes U to Y, puts it to 2 getting the rush to1, makes it and is away again.

Rushes U back to 4b after 4, ending upo about 6 yds short. Unclear whether that was a peel attempt as U ends up just N of 4b without troubling the hoop

A bit of loose play here ends up with jawsing the 4b peel going to 6, but with the 1b pioneer 5 ft NW of 4b. Can't think that was deliberate

All remaining somewhat agricultural: no rush after 3b, so penult pioneer is rolled to 5yds NNW of the hoop, the penult peel bounces a ft to the side, and the rush to 4b ends up 4 yds S. Needless to say he copes with 4b and no some accurate play sets up a good position for the straight double. Rober pioneer is midway between peg and rover, which is a bit further S than most people would have it

Poor croquet stroke ends upwith peelee only 2 ft through and K in the middle of the jaws. Rushes U to peeling position at rover, thus justifying pioneer position! Elects to attempt peel with a split, and it inevitanly bounces of to 1 yd W. Rushes R back to Y by penult and makes rover off Y

Rushes Y to E boundary level with rover after running the hoop. Takes off back to U and rushes it just off the E boundary level with 3. In rolling it across to the W boundary, U hits hoop six and ends up 3 yds E of 2 and only 6yds out of baulk. R is rushed near the peg and glued to the E side of it, and difficult to rush to 2 or 3. K goes to middle of W boundary

7 Y hits 6 yarder at U from B baulk and rushes it close to K. Gets a rush on K to 2. After 2 puts u out as a good pioneer to 4 and rushes R reasonably close to 3, 3yds WNW of it. Longish hoop sial through with no wire and he has a break after hitting the 8 yd retrun

8 Completes break to 4b with a reverse NSL: U in the jaws of 2, K 3yds ESE of the peg R&Y on W boundary slightly N of peg high, R with a rush to K likely cross pegged from it

The reverse NSL is not bad in this position, but with U&K the other way round. Then even if U hits K is unrushable to rover or the peg and the finish is difficult. This way U has an easy finish if it hits, and conceivably K could just peg out

Clips
rov peg 1 4b

8 U lifts and misses 17 yarder at K to S boundary behind 4

9 R rushes Y very close to K, so has to leave it near the peg gettign a rush on K to U. Makes 1 off U, rushes back to S boundary and puts U to 4 getting an in court rush on K. Sends K to 3 and approaches 2 off Y putting it deep. Runs 2 to the boundary and rushes Y across to 4b. Puts it in peeling position and now has a standard tp.

Straight 4b peel sails 3 yds through.

Picks up Y after 4 and is in perfect position after 6. Peels goes 3 yds through.
