GAME 1

    Dumergue
    Mulliner

1 U supershot 1 yd SW of peg

2 R joins U 4yds E

3 K misses U from A baulk

4 Y hits 8 ydr at K from B baulk. Approaching 5 with all the balls

Goes to 4b with  a spread. K 1 yd off W boundary a bit N of peg

Clips
1 1 1 4b

Lunch. Which is a particularly fine mutton Methi, cooked by Chris Patmore who has flown in especially from New York to cook for us today

5 Ian is looking to see if K is open to U from where they lie

Decides it is, but misses the shot

6 R has a standard tp as he runs 3

4b peel a ft through after 3

Rushes peelee hard S after 4, but can't get it back to penult. Grovels through 5 trying to run it gently, and misses 4yd hampered shot at partner

Clips
1 1 6 pen

Clips have been replaced the wrong way round

7 K hits 7 ydr at Y, clangs 1 with all the balls

8 R centre balls 8 ydr with hoop 6 ball, whose clip remember is on penult

Runs penult with hoop 6 ball! Consensus is they will just carry on to thend of the game and not notice

I'm not sure how to show the clips in my graphic now...

Anyway, R makes penult & rover, crosswires U&K at 1b and laying up in C4 withy an 8ft rush to 1b

Clips
1 1 peg 6

These being the physical positions, really R is for6, Y for penult. Anyone reading this at Surbiton needs to keep shtum.

9 U misses K into C4

10 Y (for penult) runs 6 with a ball at 1b, should finish from here

Which he duly does.

GAME 2

======

    Mulliner
    Dumergue

1 U 12 yd supershot

2 R misses dribble at U from C1

3 K hits 18 ydr at R from B baulk

Rushes and approaches poorly to 1, fails 2yd hoop

4 Y rush peels K through 1 from A baulk. Great roll sends K to 2 getting a good rush on R to U

Rushes U 8ft past hoop 1, comfortably runs 3 ft hoop and is away

Looking like an MSL as he approaches 2b

MSL, or NSL with K very close to 2, it is, with R&Y quite a way N

Clips
1 2 1 4b

5 U misses long lift into C4, Stephen's body language indicating he might have got a bit of hill

6 R has run 2 with U&Y at 3/4b. Didn't actually see it, but probably must have rolled U out of C4 to 3 going to 2. Standard tp now

4b peel jawsed after 3. Immediately before doing that, Ian had retired for a few moment back to the players' hut. Some of the kibbitzers round me rather unkindly suggesting he'd gone to consult his copy of Wylie...

Peel completed after 4, rolled beyond 6 going to 5

Penult peel goes through a yd after 6

Rover peel through 18" going to 3b

Finishes

Mulliner lost to Dumergue +25TP

GAME 3

======

    Dumergue
    Mulliner

1 U to E boundary 11 yds N of C4

2 R to W boundary (looks like) just S of C2

3 K misses long shot at U into C4

4 Y hits R in C2. Takes off to U, sends it 1, and rolls K to 3 returning to R in C2

5 U misses 30 ydr at R in C2 from hoop 1

6 Y plays a good cannon out of corner 2, runs hoop 1 from a ft at a slight angle, getting a rush at K and is away

Goes to 4b with a spread

Clips
1 1 1 4b

7 U centre balls 17 ydr at K by the peg. Takes off to R&Y. Makes 1 and is approaching 2 from 5 yds dead in front.

Runs good 3ft hoop to the boundary and is away. Oppo 4b ball is at hoop 4, so won't be a tpo

Well, that prediction turns out to be spot on as he clangs hoop 3, presumably from nowhere

8 Fortunately from a GB perspective it was off the hoop 1 ball, so if Stephen makes hoop 1 he has a laid standard tp for the match and GB's fifth point of the day

Runs hoop 1 from a foot and is away

4b peel goes 1 yd through after 3. It's a race with Rutger who is also on a standard tp for the match on lawn 3. Rutger is currently 6 strokes ahead

Rutger breaks down, so Stephen just needs to finish...

Penult peel goes 3 yds through after 6

Rover peel looks just through going to 3b. Umpire on to check. Umpire goes to get piece of cotton to test, meanwhile Stephen carries on his turn...

So far as we can tell now, peel wasn't completed, and Stephen has elected to rush it back to the playing side of rover and (re-)do it straight, rather than complete it after 3b

Irished through to 3 yds off S boundary. Finishes to guarantee handsome lead going into the last round of doubles tomorrow
