Maugham (GB) v Chapman (NZ)

Please use this link to get to the end of the commentary.

Good morning from Nottingham. I've been joined by James Death today, so he'll be taking lawns 4 and 5 and no doubt keeping you all entertained with his banter.

I've got Lines v Clarke on lawn 1 and Maugham v Chapman on lawn 2

Yesterday was a good day for GB. For the first time, we used really good tactics all day and reaped the rewards. It needed an excellent performance from the top Kiwi pair to prise a point away from us.

So, 4-2, is a good lead and I expect it to be extended today.

The lawns have just been timed and despite overnight rain, they have surprisingly been reported to me as 11.5. Given we must have had several inches of rain since they were measured at 11 to 11.5 3 days ago in the dry, this is interesting.

Fulford described playing conditions yesterday as just as easy as the 2009 Opens, so I wouldn't be surprised if he tries some sextuples today if he takes croquet with 4 balls on the lawn

A high pitched extended laugh indicates Hilditch has arrived

    Maugham

Y 14 yard supershot

K 17y S of C3

R hits K from C3.....makes hoop 1 and has break

Dave has badly misapproached hoop and tries a near impossible hoop....fails to W boundary.

If Paddy can hit his 6 yarder, Dave should finish the turn on 3 and 3

Paddy has a 4 ball break

Y is popped through hoop 1 before 5 and Paddy has his hoop 6 pioneer 2 yards SE of hoop 2 ready for the second pop

Paddy fails to pop hoop 2 before 6 and needs a referee to watch his hampered rush..... no problems

Y is popped through hoop 2 after 1-b

Clips
4b 1 3 3

R is in C4

Y is 17y N of C1 and a few inches in from the yard line

K is 2 feet S of C2

U is 2 feet S of K

Good turn from Paddy.

Y has lifted to B-Baulk and is taking the shot at K............

..........misses on the left

Paddy has just run hoop 2 from 4 feet as if it wasn't there. R is still in C4 though

Paddy gets the 4-b peel before hoop 6

Paddy's 2 back pioneer is 9 yards away from the hoop, but it won't matter in these conditions.

Paddy jawses penult before 4-b

An angled 4-b, but it might as well not be there

Game 2

    Chapman
    Maugham

T1 K 14y narrow supershot

T2 Y dribbles at K and hits in the middle. Croquets K 3y W of hoop 2 and hits Y off 2 feet N of C4

T3 U shoots at K from B-baulk............hits in the middle

Paddy takes off from K and gets rush on Y to hoop 1. JP would be pleased with that one!!

This is just great play from Paddy. He's completely fluent and doesn't look like making an error

Paddy is round to 4-b with a 3 ducks leave

T4 R misses comfortably

Paddy has made hoop 2 and has a standard TP
