Huneycutt (USA) v Chapman (NZ)

Please use this link to get to the end of the commentary.

So NZ have clinched the match, having maintained the momentum they've built over the last couple of days to take both the matches to finish so far today. USA seem to be suffering a bit of a hangover following their record 14-7 Mac victory over Australia in the last test. But I'm sure that pride will mean they will continue to fight.

Paddy is a truly impressive 4/5 in singles so far, and Danny, who has looked the pick of the Americans despite strong competition from Ben Rothman, is a nonbe too shabby 3/5. Sextuple attempts from either, but especially Paddy I would say, would be no surpise.

GAME 1

======

    Huneycutt
    Chapman

1 U supershot

2 Y to 7 yds E of peg

3 K misses Y into C4

4 R hits K in C4. Has all the balls as he runs 3, so will see if there's going to be any sextupling soon

5 Standard 4b break, so NZ intent on keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Goes to 4b with perfect NSL, K 5 yds off W boundary about 3 yds N of peg

Clips
1 1 4b 1

6 U misses long lift into C4

7 Y makes 1 with a rush towards C4. Rushes straight in for a cannon. If he gets a rush across to 4b after 3 it'll be a standard tp

Cuts R across to 7 yds S after 2, but rolls it past peeling position, so tp will be delayed now

Has cunningly managed to cannon peelee back into position before 3, and jawses peel after

gets poor position to complete rush peel, but peelee luckily rebounds to a position where it can be peeled with a thick take off going to 6

Peel fails however, so 2b pioneer is left at 4b for peel after 1b

4b peel again recalcitrant, copes with 25 yd rush to 2b, rushes back after for another attempt, 3b pioneer also having been left at 4b

This time peel jawses, and has a perfect 1ft rush to 3b, so should have a decent position for the straight double

4b peel finally completed straight, and peelee croqueted across to penult going to the 4b pioneer

Penult peel is Irished up to peg high

Over hits rush to rover, which momentarily looks like it might end up in the jaws, before hilling slightly to end up immediately W of the hoop

K rushed to maximum point on E boundary after running rover. U stuffed to 9 yds N of 1. R&Y in C2, R with a rush at U

Clips
1 1 rov peg

8 U hits short lift solidly

Fails to get a rush to 1, rolls up from 17 yds to 3ft in front, but sticks

9 R misses 24 ydr at K from NW of 2

10 K hits 6 yd pickup of R and is away

I imagine he'll not be thinking of anything but a solid ball to 4b with a full hammer leave. Something like Y (for the peg) glued onto the back of 1, unrushable to rover or the peg

No, it's a 1b leave. Another of those "What do I know?" moments. Close cross wire, should really have had rover ball much closer to C1. R&Y both open on U, wired from K

Clips
1 1b rov peg

11 R attempts what looks to us like an impossible shot, jumping 1 to hit Y, given that R&Y are both within a yard of hoop 1. Inevitably clangs off towards hoop 4

Rhys Thomas reckons this might be the first American sextuple attempt in any test match. It would certainly be the first completed

1b peel goes through 3 yds before hoop 2. Peelee and hoop 4 pioneer sent to 2b after

Position good enought to put hoop 5 pioneer at 5 I'd say, which he does

Bit short on peelee, gentle clip gets it in front but at 4ft. Split peel attempt hits the wire solidly, but bounces to an inch dead in front, eminently rush peelable

Rush after 4 goes to 4 yds N of 5, not an ideal place for the hoop 6 pioneer. Takes off, but 2b peel fails, springs off the wire to completely un-peelable position

Stuffs hoop 5 pioneer to position by 2b as hoop 6 pioneer. Runs 5 and roquets first hoop 6 pioneer S, sending it to 9 yds N of 2b. Completes 2b pioneer, rushes to 4 yds W of 6 and runs hoop with a rush pointing at 4b

Puts 2b pioneer and peelee at 3b. Makes 1b and rushes to 3b. Now has long 4yd 3b peel attempt

Peel fails, but looks to be about 2" fairly straight in front, so could be rushed down close to 4b

Doesn't get position for the rush peel, but Irishes it from within the jaws. to 3 yds SE of 4b

Rushes peelee to a yd approx WSW of 4b. Elects to give up at this point, Y just off E boundary level with 4, R 3 yds E of peg, U on W boundary level with 6, K 3 yds E of U

Clips
4b 4b rov peg

12 R misses short lift at Y from end of A baulk

13 U rushes K to 5yds W of penult. Takes off to R&Y. Rushes Y to 4b and runs a 4ft 45degree hoop to the boundary. Question now is whether to peg Y off. Again it would be good to get Y glued on a hoop unrushable to rover or the peg, but not much time to achieve it

Makes penult and rushes to 3yds N of rover, K 2 yds NE of rover, Y 3yds WSW of penult

R being left 4 yds off end of A baulk, so looks like Y's a goner. Not a fan of this, as it's often more difficult to finish from rover and peg than rover alone, but he wasn't going to get a great leave so may be OK. Y goes, K is at maximum psotition on W boundary, U quite reasonably joins up, offering R a target from A baulk

Clips
peg 4b rov box

14 Which it takes. Gusty wind has blown up, so lots of restalking going on

Clips outside of target, should finish

Good approach from 3 yds NE of rover. Runs it and hits 5 ydr and takes to 1ft, finishes

1 Y 12 yd supershot

2 K misses Y from C1 to 5yds past

3 R misses Y&K from c1 to 5 yds N of 3

4 U misses double of R&K from C3

5 Y plays and has just made 1 with a ball 8 yds SSE of 2, so should be fine from here

Looks likje it's going to be another 1b leave, Danny determined to grab his piece of US Mac history...

Wrong again, just an oppo ball finding itself randomle at hoop 1, before being removed shortly after. Now approaching 4b heading for an MSL. Which it is

Clips

Notable former GB Mac players spectating today are the Williams Ormerod and Prichard, Nigel Aspinall and Colin Irwin. I'm sure they send their greetings to any old foes following the matches

6 K lifted from hoop 2, taking the short lift at R from A baulk. think there's a bit of U poking into the target

Misses R on the U side, so couldn't have been by much

7 R approaching 2 with partner at 4 and U at 3. Runs 2 cleanly, and clips 3ydr to just off middle of W boundary. Puts K to 4, no rush on partner. Rolls Y to 8yds S of 4b, so any peel attempt likely to be speculative here

No rush back after running 3, so 8yd peel attempt it is. Misses to about 18" NW of the hoop

Comes back after 4 to set up for the 4b peel going to 6

Peels 4b after 6, sends peelee to 2b before 1b. Almost rushes to peeling position after 2b, but now sets up for peel going to 4b

Penult peel goes 6" through going to 4b

Rover peel Irished 6 yds through straight. Finishes

So the decider will provide excellent tea-time entertainment in front of the club house

Well, soon as the players have had theirs, I guess

The players have returned, but have to wait for a raffle being held on the perimeter of lawn 2 to disperse. I'm sure JR approves...

1 Y supershot

3 R hits U from B baulk. Runs tricky hoop 1, makes 2 with a 3 ball break ahead

Goes to 4b, 3 Ducks

Clips

4 K misses Y into C2

I'VE BEEN ASKED AT THIS POINT TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT PLAY WILL START AT 09:00 BST TOMORROW

4b peel jawsed from about 3ft straight after 3. Looks to be most of the way through. Completes peel after 4, but has to send it slightly E of the hoop going to 5

Very angled penult peel position after 6. Probably aiming to jaws it

Does, and rushes it 3yds S of rover after 1b

Rover peeled 5 yds through on the way to 3b. All over now

Duly finishes, for 5/6 singles record
