Grimsley & Rothman (USA) v Skinley & Wright (NZ)

Please use this link to get to the end of the commentary.

Good morning from Surbiton.  Sorry bit slow setting up so missed the opening, but Wright is now playing the first break.  He's up to hoop 6.

Wright to 4-back.  Look like a failed NSL.  Rothman is able to play the ball at hoop 4 and hit a shortish (10y?) roquet.

It looks like Rothman failed hoop 1 off partner.  Wright misses 16-yarder.  Rothman now taking on 6-yarder at Wright's ball (Blue).  Hits.  Puts Blue to hoop 2, trying for rush on partner which is 4y N of hoop 1.  Christs it off.  Takes off into back of hoop.  Takes position.

Wright misses 14-yarder.

Rothman is apparently unhampered as he takes on Yellow at Blue again (16').  Hits again.  This time he underhits croquet stroke:  Blue probably 8y shy of hoop 2, Yellow level with Red.  Takes off and makes hoop 1.

After a short walk I've established that Black is in 4th corner - presumably since the failed NSL earlier.

Rothman has break.

Rothman is making 1-back.

Rothman round to 4-back, having a spread with Blue at the peg.

Skinley lifts Black to B-baulk.  Misses (20y?).

Grimsley has picked up a 3-ball break, but sticks in hoop 3.

Wright shoots Blue (nr 3) at Yellow (nr 4) (15y), missing, joining up with partner.

USA on lawn looking at state of Red in 3.  Can't be great, Rothman is shooting Yellow at Blue (8y).  Misses.

Sorry, I mis-read the body language.  Rothman hit the 8-yarder (at Black not Blue)

Rothman leaves Blue ESE of 4, close to it.  Black maybe 10yN of hoop 1, wired from Blue, Red (for 3) near 3rd corner, Yellow 3 or 4 yards into lawn.

Wright, Blue plays away to 2nd corner.

Grimsley (Red) makes 3, rushes Yellow 3y N of 5, takes off to Black.  Not a great cut rush, rolling to 4 from 6 or 7y.  4' angled hoop, failed.

Skinley (Black) hits Red (5y).  Red to hoop 2, rushes Yellow 2yE of 1.  Standard TP all there if he makes this (Blue is in 2nd corner). He makes hoop and has rush toward peg / 3.   Rushes between 3 and 3rd corner.  Takes off to Blue...  goes off lawn!

Grimsley (Red) shoots at Black and Blue (8y, target?).  Hits Black.

Grimsley has a cannon, which he uses to promote a ball to be his hoop 4 pioneer,  going to the other ball (between 3 and III).  This goes well and he has a break.  Now setting up for 4-back peel before 1-back (1-b pioneer at 4-back).  Peel goes through, needs a good cut.  Rushes 3y E of hoop, grovels through, referee required.

Grimsley copes with hampered stroke after 1-back.  Good 2-b pioneer, peelee 5yN of 4-back.

Injury report.  I didn't see Rothman kicking his mallet, but he may have hurt his toe.

Grimsley (Red) gets good rush after 2-back.  Blue is croqueted near penult for the delayed double.  Yellow sitting pretty in front of penult.

it looks like the penult peel before 4-b has bounced to the side, so Grimsley needs a straight double to finish.  Partner on lawn advising.

USA settle for penult and peg, with spread i think.

Skinley lifts Black to 3rd corner, hits 20-yarder.

Skinley makes 2 but fails an angled hoop 3.  He was going for a standard TP so Yellow has 2 balls to play with.

Rothman should finish.

USA 1-0  (+15)

G2T1  Grimsley (Blue) 3y NNW of 5

G2T2  Skinley (yellow) shoots at Blue from 1st corner, misses, ending up 4y NE peg.

G2T3 Rothman (Black) shoots at Yellow from B-baulk, misses, ending up 3yE of 5.

G2T4 Wright (Red) hits Black (10y).

G2T4  Wright picks up break.  Now on hoop 5.

G2T4  Wright's just made 2-back.  Spread coming up...

G2T4  Wright round to 4-back.  Spread with Blue at peg, but Red and Yellow are only about 5y N of 4th corner.

G2T5  Rothman lifts Black, takes short shot at Yellow.  Centre ball.

G2T5  Rothman (Black) is making 2 off Red (the 4-back ball).  Now has all the balls, with Red his hoop 4 pioneer.

G2T5  Rothman seems to be contemplating a POP.  Or not.  Just a ball to 4-back I think.

G2T5  Rothman to 4-back with spread - Red at peg.

They're breaking for lunch.

Sorry they've restarted on lawn 4 while I was concentrating on lawn 3.

I presume:

G2T6  Skinley lifted Yellow to B-baulk, missing to 4th corner.

G2T7  Grimsley picks up break.  He's now for 5, eyeing up the delayed TP

This is by far the largest crowd we've had this year.  Maybe 80 spectators now all told.  And the sun is shining.

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue) peels Black through 4-back before 6.

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue)  is croqueting Black to be his 2-back pioneer.  I can't see Red from here (just S of lawn 2 1st corner), so it must be in Eastern quarter of lawn.  Blue is making 1-back off Yellow.

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue) now has Yellow near penult.  He's croqueting Red to 3-back from 3yN of 1st corner.  Underhits croquet stroke, so rolling up to 2-back from 8'.  Copes, has 3-yard rush on Black toward penult.  Not in front, but not bad.  Should be able to attempt penult peel before 4-back.

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue) gets a sort of rush out of 3-back, lining up penult peel before 4-back.  Through it goes.  It looks good for USA.

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue) has Red (his penult pioneer) 3y S of penult, which will shorten the distance from which he's positioning Black for rover.  That looks very good from here - 1' more or less in front.  Should finish....

G2T7ctd  Grimsley (Blue) has 2-yard peg-out for match.

USA wins +15 +17TP(G)
