Jeff Dawson won the Surbiton Easter Advanced Tournament

[<<] [>>] by Kevin Carter
27-28 Mar 2005 (AC)

Thirty-one players remembered to adjust their clocks for British Summer Time. It's a pity about Jon Male, but one day we might achieve a full house!

This was a high quality tournament, with almost half the field on scratch or below. Among the 104 results 21 triples were recorded.

Fresh from his triumph in the Surbiton Handicap tournament in the preceding two days, Jeff Dawson also played consistently well in this one, winning all six of his games. By finishing ahead of Jonathan Kirby, Mark Avery and others, Jeff showed he is always a force to be reckoned with, especially at Surbiton. Unfortunately there was no cup to present to him, since it was not returned by last year's winner (who was leading the GB 'A' team to their win over the USA).

There were several other notable performances. Jamie Burch had an excellent tournament, beating four top players, and going down only to Jeff, to take second place. John Cosier, Gary Bennett and David Mooney all played well, bagging some good scalps. Ten games were played in the two days by both Mark and Rutger. But the four hour game between Jonathan Kirby and Malcolm Bigg might be one they prefer to forget.
