Surbiton Golf Croquet Tournament

9-10 Apr 2005 (GC)

The first Golf Croquet Tournament of the season took place last weekend at Surbiton under blue skies but in arctic conditions.

The 24 players were seeded into blocks of 6, with 5 rounds played on the Saturday as 'Best of Two' 13 point matches. The blocks threw up some interesting results with only one of the seeds, Chris Sheen winning his block. The other block winners were New Zealander Shane Davis, playing his first Golf Croquet tournament, Simon Carter from Sydenham and Dick Stover from Colchester.

Sunday saw a rerun of Saturday's Grand National with the favourite and top seed Chris Sheen romping home with the title. On the way he disposed of Chris Daniels (Parkstone), Shane Davis and Dick Stover in the final (7-6, 7-5). The rest of the field played on for the minor places and the final positions were as follows:

1. Chris Sheen
2. Dick Strover
3. Roy Ware
4. Shane Davis
5. Derek Old
6. Don Beck
7. Chris Daniels
8. Simon Carter
9. Tim King
10. John Moore
11. Nelson Morrow
12. Bill Arliss

18. Par Badham
19. Bob Pritchard
20. Mark Hamilton

As a spectator commented "It is great to see Golf Croquet being taken seriously in England!"
