Mark Avery won the Southwick Salver

[<<] [>>] by Dave Kibble at Southwick
16-17 Apr 2005 (AC)

Mark Avery won the Southwick Salver open Weekend, beating Dave Kibble +17tp, +17tp in an error-free final. In game one, Mark hit Dave's Duffer tice and laid a Dream Leave; Dave hit the shortest shot and went to 4-back with a D-Spread offering a 25 yard lift, Mark lifted the peg ball and hit the long shot on the nose, sending the yard line ball to the North boundary. He then managed the take-off to get a perfect rush across the court, finishing with an NSL; Dave missed the lift and Mark finished. In game 2, Mark replied to a standard first ball just N of corner 4, Dave joined with it, Mark hit partner and went to 4-back with an NSL, Dave hit the long lift but struggled to get the break under control, eventually finishing with no peels and an improvised OSL, mark hit the corner ball and finished. Jeff Dawson beat Lionel Tibble for third place.

Rutger Beijderwellen won the plate, despite many silly peeling attempts; it was good to see him back in form and smiling. He beat David Mundy in the final.

The real star of the tournament though were the lawns, so much improved from recent years and really looking good and playing true. They are still fairly slow, but nothing unexpected for the time of year. The club has successfully done much work on levelling, re-turfing and has installed a watering system. Gone are the familiar boundary slopes and hoops on hillsides. Their new contractor is clearly a leap in the right direction.

The two Nicks (Parish and Harris) continue to improve - Harris beating #3 seed Panther and then being only one game short of a plate play-off place.

Jamie Burch showed his continued improvement with two 5th turn triples, he said "well, I saw all these good players using the supershot opening so I thought I'd give it a try, and it worked really well".

This was an unusual version of this tournament in that the final was almost ready to play first thing on Sunday morning - had the manager got on with playing and not spent so much time managing, it would have been.

Lunches were again in the upper echelons, worthy of some finer wines to go with them perhaps?

In the plate final, Rutger found himself hampered after running a hoop and was faulted because he had used a one-handed grip with his right arm through the hoop, but stabilised the mallet by wrapping his sleeve around the back of the head. This is not explicitly outlawed, so he appealed to the RoT, who ruled it was a fault under law 3, saying that the sleeve constituted an artificial aid attached to the mallet.
