Rutger played well throughout the tournament and shot stunningly (including some pretty long hoops run to the boundary). He'd pretty well lost to Jerry Guest in the quarter-final (single game) when he decided to peg-out his opponent even though he was Rover and peg vs. 1-back and peg. Some long hoops made his finish nail-biting.

In the second game of the semi-final Rutger NZ-TPOed Paul Salisbury - a 1-back leave having completed one peel, then peeled Paul out and peeled partner to 4-back pegging 2 off - leaving 1 vs. 4-back. Paul seemed to have little idea how to win from that position (not that it would have been easy) and shot into a trap, leaving Rutger the opportunity to play some fun shots to finish.

In the final, the first game was evenly matched with a 5th turn ball round from Rutger after hitting a long shot when Dave Kibble failed to run 2 having rolled off 1 from corner 4 and failed to get in front of 2 from corner 2. The leave was poor though, and Dave went to 4-back with 2 POPs and the 4-back ball on the back of 1. Rutger missed the lift but Dave stuck in 1, Rutger hit and had a leave, Dave hit and had a leave, Rutger hit and ... you get the picture, I'm sure.

The final game should have gone differently after Dave TPOed and played some good shots to pull out a break but failed a long 3, Rutger's hoop; fortunately he missed. Dave had a leave but Rutger hit into corner 2 from South of hoop 4, played some good shots to get going, and finished.

In the picture is the winner, Rutger, and the now 3 COW (Compton Open Weekend) pun prizes: the COW horn, for the winner of the main event; the COW bell for the winner of the Swiss consolation event (the bell has a Swiss mountain scene on it); and now the COW pat, the wooden spoon for the "worst player of the tournament", calculated on the knockout count-back system: Beijderwellen beat Kibble in the final, so Kibble must be worse than Beijderwellen, Mundy lost to Kibble in the semi-final so he must be worse than him, Vincent is worse than Mundy, and the first-round loser to Vincent, Paul Miles, therefore got the COWpat! Despite this, Paul was in contention for the Swiss right up to the final rounds.
