Ian Lines and Dave Nick(olson)

Ian Lines beat David Nicholson +16, +2 in the final of the Southport September Advanced Weekend, to retain the Sandiforth Salver.

The lawns at Southport were much improved, with hardly a trace of the tufts of sedge grass which made playing earlier in the season somewhat interesting. There was a little light rain on Saturday morning which made the even paced lawns fairly easy, but the weather improved over the weekend and we had glorious sunshine by Sunday afternoon.

There were few surprises in the early rounds, with games going pretty much according to seeding, although an improving Mike Sandler had a good win over Alan Pidcock.

In the first game of the final, Dave won the opening, but went off the lawn, allowing Ian to go to 4 back with a diagonal spread. Dave hit the long lift and started a standard TPO, which became an adventurous delayed TPO, which came to grief by missing a 4 yarder just before 3 back whilst setting up for a delayed double. Ian finished +16.

In the second game, Ian hit a standard tice 3rd turn and laid a spread. Dave hit the long shot again and went to 4 back very tidily, remembering at the last minute not to join up as red and blue - so the leave wasn't great. Ian missed the 11 yarder giving Dave what should have been a standard TP to level the match. However, just before the straight rover peel, Dave had some bad luck with a ball ending up inconveniently in contact with the peelee, so Dave got the long range peel but failed to make rover. Ian went to 4 back with a spread, leaving the peg ball by the peg and the rush pointing midway between the hoop 2 ball and hoop 1. Dave chose to "Suter off" (peg out - after Mark Suter I told) his peg ball, on the basis that Ian might not get going on the 3 ball break. Nevertheless, Ian successfully cut the rush to hoop 1, and went to peg leaving Dave in corner 1 and his balls at the north boundary with a 1 yard straight rush to 4 back, with the boundary ball completely wired by hoop 6. Dave shot, missing hoop 6 by half an inch, and hit the wired ball! Unfortunately, the rush to rover only reached the peg and Dave failed rover. Ian hit the ball in the jaws and made a defensive leave with both his balls on north boundary north of 4 back and Dave near corner 1 - Dave lurked on the boundary north of hoop 2 - Ian rearranged the balls putting Dave again near corner 1 and leaving himself a dolly rush to 4 back. Dave shot into the trap, missing this time, and Ian finished to win

The plate event was won by David Barrett, who beat Alan Pidcock in an entertaining teatime shootout at the peg (which was hit at the 14th attempt from 14 yards).

Congratulations to David Nicholson for getting his CA Silver Medal for getting to the final of a 16 player CA open knockout tournament for the first time. Mike Sandler reduced his handicap from 3 to 2.5, and Ian Lines went from -1.5 to -2 for the second time in 12 months, having taken 10 months to lose over 300 points, and exactly 2 months to get 200 points back!
