Colin Irwin beat John Haslam +5tp in the final of the Heaton Park Advanced Challenge on Saturday 24th September.

The event was run as a one day X, Y, Z, with 16 entrants for the main X event, with first round losers playing in the Y. Unfortunately, Dave Nick broke down on the way to Heaton Park so Barbara Young volunteered to step in to the Y at the last minute.

Richard Griffiths had a good first round win over Alan Pidcock, and John Haslam played solidly to beat Ian Lines and Jenny Williams in the quarters and semis respectively. The final of the X was somewhat scrappier, but Colin Irwin prevailed in the end.

The main excitement of the day was a couple of notable firsts: Alan Pidcock had his first ever tournament triple to beat Paul Rigge +21tp in the final of the Y, and Jerry Guest completed his first ever tournament sextuple (after 10 years of trying!) to beat David Barrett +26sxp, thus winning the Z event. The sxp was a fairly standard ladies sxp, with hoop 6 made off partner, before peeling it through 4 back (angled from about 3 yards), but otherwise all very neat and controlled.

Jerry Guest also earned a handicap reduction from -0.5 to -1.

The lawns at Heaton Park are in excellent condition - very flat, with good quality uniform grass making them generally very easy, even though the hoops were set quite firmly at a 1/16th.

Many thanks to Bury Croquet Club, who run the 4 lawns at Heaton Park plus their own 2 lawns, for their hospitality and for hosting the event at such an excellent venue.
