Maugham Retains Mixed Doubles Championship Title

[<<] [>>] by Phil Cordingley at Edgbaston
20-21 Aug 2006 (AC - Championships)

David Maugham retained the Mixed Doubles Championship, this year in tandem with fellow Bowdon Club member Ailsa Lines. Despite its scheduled proximity to the World Championship (which finished the weekend before) the event drew a small but extremely high quality field. A cunning "best-of-two" all-play-all format was adopted, guaranteeing six games but with the probability of more should play-offs be required.

Both Lines/Maugham and Clarke/Williams won one and drew one of their first two matches, which meant that should either win their Sunday morning clash 2-0, they would be Champions. A draw between the two would almost certainly give rise to a three way tie with Openshaw/Priestley, hot favourites to beat Harrison-Wood/Hudson on the weekend's form to date. Openshaw/Priestley duly won their match, but after a less than clinical first game victory, Maugham/Lines overpowered Clarke/Williams in the second, courtesy of Maugham's 4th tp of the weekend.

Thanks to CA President Bernard Neal for travelling up from Cheltenham to present the prizes.
