Chris Farthing won the Surbiton Easter weekend

18th April 2006
(AC)
A fairly ordinary Surbiton tournament:
- 30 players; half were scratch or below;
- 103 games were played, with at least 9 being available to each of those who wanted them;
- 26 TPs were completed;
- the food was excellent and the beer exceptional;
- Nelson broke his mallet.
We again had no entries from further north than Oxfordshire. Somebody who had once been to Bowdon suggested that the permafrost hasn't melted up there by mid-April [but then it wouldn't be "perma" if it did, would it?]. Maybe we'll serve mushy peas next year; see if that draws them.
The unusual feature of this year's event was that Jeff Dawson did not win, as he normally does in any Surbiton event not contested by Robert.
This year he buckled under the strong competition from Chris Farthing, Chris Patmore, Bodgerwelly and Samir Patel. Indeed, the final was played out between the two Christophers, with Chris F winning 26TP. This was his sixth TP of the event, from eight games. He played excellently throughout and looks to become a force to be reckoned with this season.
Further down the list, Paul Salisbury and David Mooney were both having a good tournament. By tea time on the last day both were within striking distance of scratch, so they played a mini-final, which Paul won and hence collected his 'duck egg' handicap. Well done.
