Cheltenham joins Hunstanton and suffers a double blow

Vandals set fire to the bridge room at Cheltenham on Friday night, completely destroying it. The previous week all of the windows in the hut had been smashed. The police expect the vandals to return and burn down the main building in the near future. As a precaution the club has removed all valuables to members' houses, including balls and papers. Ironically the club had changed insurers at midnight on Friday - the bridge room was burnt down at 1AM, but the loss should be covered by the insurance. Only in the last few weeks the club has held fund raising events to help Hunstanton after fire destroyed their main clubhouse. |

| Most of the benches that provide seating for players during the season have been burnt to a tangle of twisted metal. |

| Roof slates were showered down on the nearby courts but have been collected up by members who were greeted by the charred building on their spring cleaning day - needless to say none of that got completed. |

| The weather vane to commemorate Edgar Jackson, a robust figure who contributed so much to the club, happily survived the blaze. |

| The almost continuous rain since October has prevented any work proceeding on the lawn renovation after the turf had been removed so Cheltenham is facing the season two lawns down and so has had to accept fewer entries for all its tournaments. |
