James Hopgood won the Tompkinson Shield on his first visit to Edgbaston. The tournament is restricted to players with handicaps between -1/2 and 3 - dubbed a "SuperB".

At the end of Saturday, 5 players were in contention: James, Kevin Carter, Carol Smith, and 2 undefeated players - Andrew Winn and Paul Watson. Andrew won their Sunday morning encounter, but then lost to James. There were now 3 players with one loss, and as time was pressing, a half-round of 14-point games was arranged. Andrew won his, but James just edged out Paul to take the trophy.

The prize for most HCPs gained went to Robert Dodds from the Shrewsbury club.
