Dave Kibble won the COWhorn (Compton Open Weekend)

6th August 2001 (AC)

A heavy downpour two nights before the weekend put a little green back into lawns baked brown during the preceding weeks and slowed them from glassy to medium-fast. The Met Office's threat of rain for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning failed to materialise and Eastbourne's sunshine reputation was hardly dented. Knock out finalists Dave Kibble and Richard White each had a scare along the way: Kibble recovered from a 20-odd point deficit against Bill Arliss to win by 3; and White beat Rodney Parkins by 6. Kibble prevailed to win the final in straight games characterised by strong defensive play and some desparately close missed long shots from White. In the consolation Swiss George Noble won all his games and also took the peeling prize with a triple against Bill Arliss and a fine straight triple against Tony Le Moignan.
