John Evans won the 2002 Welsh Championship when he defeated local youngster James Mackay +1, +5 in their best-of-3 final. John, who had lost in his 4 previous final appearances, had earlier come through a very close semi final against Sam Tudor. Sam TPO'd John in the third and was on a finishing turn when he stuck in hoop 4 off John's ball which was for 5. James beat Tony Mrozinski in 2 straight games in the other semi final. Previous 3 times winners Chris Williams and William Prichard both lost at the quarter final stage, whilst 4 times winner Ian Burridge crashed out at the block stage. William Prichard won the Consolation Plate.
