Tyneside Advanced Weekend

[<<] [>>] by Derek Watts at Tyneside
9th August 2022 (AC)

Dennis Scarr of Middlesbrough CC won the Tyneside Advanced Weekend Tournament by 1 point in a thrilling final against Anthony Miller.

The field of 6 all played each other and in sunny, dry and slightly breezy conditions, with 3 games on Saturday - Dennis and Anthony won all their games.

Sunday, however, started out differently for these two as they both lost their first games. The final game in which they played each other was requested by the players to be an untimed game. The game ebbed and flowed in either direction until Miller attempted a straight triple, which, after having peeled his 4 back ball, went awry and Scarr pounced only to come unstuck himself later when having pegged out Millers forward ball, he missed a four yard peg out with his own forward ball! By pegging out his back ball, Scarr initiated a game of one ball which, which, after a few twists and turns he eventually won.

The game was, ironically, being played on the Clock lawn and had they played to the 2.75 hour time limit, the result could possibly have been to Miller who was ahead around this time!

Dennis Scarr's first visit to this tournament will now have his name engraved on the pewter tankard along with 16 times winner Dave Maugham, so he is in fine company!
