In the final match of the tournament, Avon needed to beat Gloucestershire 3-0 to take the championship and Gloucestershire needed one game for victory on points and the match for outright victory on matches won.
After Dave Kibble pegged out to win the Championship, Paul Smith's turn sealed outright victory for the team. In Paul's final turn, after time was called and Marcus Evans had pegged out one ball, he needed to score a point to go level.
Paul hit-in from corner 2 to corner 1, took off behind a ball 2 yards off the East boundary, rushed towards Rover, made a very angled 2-foot hoop, hit the 6-yard return roquet and took off to the peg.
The +1t victory was particularly appropriate for his partner, Don Gaunt, author of the well-known book "Plus One on Time".
