Huddersfield lost to Nottingham B 5-6

9th June (AC - Short Croquet Inter-Club)

The second first-round match of the short-croquet inter-club championship was held in the very impressive Greenhead Park in Huddersfield, where local people can enjoy a children's play park, tennis, petanque, skateboarding, park run, cycling, field sports, bowls and croquet. The visitors, Nottingham B, arrived in sunny weather and there was steady interest from passers-by who stopped to watch and enquire about the game. The rain clouds soon gathered, although the torrential rain was mainly confined to a slightly extended lunch break. Playing on a crown green added an extra layer of unfamiliarity for the visitors but, despite that, Nottingham B came out as the overall winners.

Following the comments from Bowdon on the other first-round match, it is interesting to note that there was also only one game in this match that pegged out. The effect of double-banking on a short lawn is much greater than on a full sized lawn so a greater percentage of time is spent waiting or marking balls. A consultation on the possibility of increasing the time limit to 90 minutes would seem sensible.
