Match Report. The first ever Mary Rose match between Bury and Nottingham took place at Bury's Whitehead Park lawns on Saturday 14 June. The threatened thundery downpours failed to materialise and we even had sunshine for part of the day.
In the morning Dave and Michael made a fast start against Paul and Ken in the doubles, building a big lead against the Bury pair. This was gradually reeled back in but, despite running a 4 yard hoop at 2-back in the final turn, Ken couldn't manage the 4 hoop break to draw level. Tony made an even quicker start against Rick, who steadily caught up until both players were at hoop 6 and the peg; Rick then pegged Tony out and duly won. Anne and Bob had a slower start, but it was Anne who gained in confidence and steadily pulled away to win by 16.
In the afternoon Tony and Bob both made good breaks and either could have won, before a mistake by Bob let Tony in to record a win by 4 and level the match score at 2 all. Ken and Michael had a close game for the first 2 hours, before some consistent hitting-in by Ken and a crucial short miss by Michael allowed Ken to win by 8. Paul and Dave each had good breaks in the top match, which could have gone either way, but Paul eventually pulled ahead to win by 2 as time was called - match win to Bury! In the final game Rick had an early lead in a tactical tussle before Anne steadily pulled away to win by 7 on time.
