Played at Phyllis Court on September 12, Swanage (South West Federation) defeated Phyllis Court (Southern Federation) 4-3 in the final of this year's competition.
This was a very hard fought and close contest: aggregate handicaps 20 v 20, games 10-8, hoops 115-115. It was also a long match, finishing just before 7pm after a 10am start. A contributory factor to this was that, with a number of rubbers with wide handicap differences, the Target Scores calculations led to 7 of the 18 games going beyond hoop 13, one reaching hoop 16.
At the lunch break the score was 1-1 with one of the singles rubbers left unfinished at one game all, although Swanage came within one shot of winning the doubles which would have given them a 2-0 lead. The afternoon singles were shared two each although, again, Swanage had a good chance to win one of those they lost. So the match result came down to the completion of the unfinished morning singles. In mounting tension for the rest of the players this concluded in favour of Swanage at hoop 14, just one hoop short of what would have been a one hoop shootout for the match.
Frances Colman presented the trophy (which she herself had originally donated) on behalf of CqE.
