How the draw was calculated: The world rankings were recalculated using the group results and they were used to seed the players. 1 to 8 were directly placed into the draw. 9-16, 17-24 and 25-32 were randomly placed into the relevant places.
Richard Hilditch adds: Furthermore according to http://www.wcfcroquet.org/Tournaments/Mitsubishi-2005-World-Croquet-Championship.htm#ko "The draw for the Knock-Out stage shall be done in accordance with WCF Regulations to eliminate, as far as possible, the possibility of players from the same country or players that have already played each other in the Group Stage, from meeting in the first round."
You can see that this was achieved completely (so for instance the 13 English players are all in different 1st round matches). I should emphasise that these arrangements were agreed by the WCF well in advance of the event. Great care was taken with the preparation and the implementation of this draw, congratulations to Andrew Gregory and his assistants on this being so smooth.
