Belgian National Championships

[<<] [>>] by Alex Jardine
2-3 Sep 2006 (International)

Held as usual on the beautiful lakeside lawn at the Hotel du Lac, Genval, this year's Nationals was dominated by the newest player in the field. In only his fourth year of competition, Irishman Arthur Forbes was in unbeatable form to win his second tournament in successive weekends. Having equally destroyed the field in the "Mallet" handicap a week earlier, he earned yet another handicap-reduction. Would a drop in eight days from 9 via 6 to (the recommended) 4 be some sort of record?

While Arthur notched up his five wins, out-of-sorts favourite Bruno Eeman struggled uncharacteristically to finish on three, together with an ebullient John Swabey and guest manager Alex Jardine, still unable to find past form.

True to normal September conditions, the rain that held off till the very end of Saturday play made certain that Sunday was a "soft" day, perhaps in tribute to the winner's reputed national climate.

2 Alex Jardine 3/5
3 John Swabey 3/5
4 Bruno Eeman 3/5
