Golf Croquet World Championships gets underway

The Golf Croquet World Championships started today in Cape Town under a beautiful blue sky and morning temperature of 27C.

At Rondebosch, Reg Bamford (SA) won a close game against Joe Hogan (NZ) 7-4 7-6. In the second he was 6-4 down and Joe had a 2-yard slightly angled hoop at the 13th to take the game. He missed, Reg jawsed a ball, Joe could not dislodge it, and Reg cannoned it through. David Openshaw bt Philip Drew 7-2 7-5.

At Kelvin Grove club where two croquet lawns and two bowling greens are being used the Egyptians had early successes. Reigning champion Mohamed Nasr bt Mark Hamilton (Eng) 7-3 7-1. Yasser Esmat bt Nelson Morrow(NZ) 7-6 7-5. Ahmed El Maadi bt Evan Newell (Ire) 7-1 5-7 7-2 and Tony Stephens (NZ) bt P Beaudry (Belgium) 5-7 7-5 7-5
