The first round of this prestigious event, took place at Pendle against Beverley & East Riding. The match was played in very hot conditions. All the players seemed to wilt under the heat as the day progressed.
During the morning session Robin Delves and Catherine Parnell beat Mike Evans and Mike Kirby +19 in doubles. In the singles Abdul Ahmad beat Jim Gillespie +6. The lunch was delayed as John Kennedy displayed remarkable nerves to begin a come back from a hopeless position with under half an hour left. He took his forward ball from 2 to rover. Andrew Webb took refuge in corner 1 well away from his partner ball. John having drawn level unfortunately broke down at penult from 3 giving Andrew an easy start. Andrew won +1 on time.
The afternoon singles matches were as follows: Abdul Ahmad beat John Kennedy +10, Robin Delves beat Mike Evans +11, Catherine Parnell beat Mike Kirby +18, Andrew Webb lost to Jim Gillespie -4. Andrew clanged when on rover and rover with Mike at 4 back and penult. Jim showed great determination to salvage a point for Beverley and completed the game in two neat turns.
