Auckland beat Kenilworth 5-2 in the first round of the Golf Croquet Inter-Club Competition.
A look at the detail shows that seven games went to 7 - 6 with the morning doubles match containing three of them. Auckland lost the first game and Kenilworth had a ball in the jaws of hoop 13, leaving Freda Vitty a jump shot from about five feet away; she played it successfully and then Auckland went on to win the decider.
So at lunch, it was Auckland leading 2 - 1, Jane Pringle having won her morning singles. After lunch, both Pat Rogers and Freda Vitty, won their singles, leaving Eugene Brady able to relax in the third game against Peter Dennis, eventually winning that 7 - 6.
All but one match went to three games, with Rachel Rowe being the only Kenilworth winner, beating both Eugene Brady and Jane Pringle.
With galeforce winds gusting about 50 mph, playing this Inter-Club tie on neutral ground at Nottingham, was difficult, frustrating and at times, comic.
Kenilworth is one of several new clubs to play in this competition and I hope they will continue to enter in the future.
