Philip Wood won the B Class Golf Croquet Tournament at Edgbaston, beating Eileen Burton in the final, with Philip just managing to edge in front to beat Eileen with a final score of 7-5.
The day began with everyone anxious to get started after the usual permitted knock-up, since the morning was not a particularly warm one. The draw for two blocks of five took place and some extremely close games were played prior to lunch.
Fortified by the excellent hot lunch and the completion of one more round, Richard Thompson, the manager, announced the winners and runners up for each block. Eileen Buxton from Ashby came first following the match with Gill Brooks from Broadwas, both each having won three games but Eileen went through on 'who won who'. Philip Wood from Kenilworth, won all his four games and D. John Edwards from Broadwas, was runner up with three wins.
The semi-finals produced some very closely contested games but Eileen Buxton went on to win her game against D. John Edwards 7-6 and Philip Wood beat Gill Brooks 7-6.
This is the second year this tournament has taken place, which was organised by the Tournament Manager, Richard Thompson of Edgbaston Croquet Club.
Ted Jackson, Chairman of the Edgbaston Croquet Club, gave the ten competitors a most cordial welcome on their arrival, wishing everyone the best of luck. Following the award of the trophy a vote of thanks was give to Richard for organising such a delightful competition.
