Samantha Thompson won the Kate Jones Memorial Trophy

[<<] [>>] by Freda Vitty at Ripon Spa Hotel Croquet Club
16 Aug 2009 (GC - Championships)

Samantha Thompson won the Kate Jones Memorial Trophy, the second Golf Croquet Eight.

A random draw had paired Samantha Thompson and Derek Old in the last round on Sunday afternoon. Derek went into this match unbeaten and Samantha had lost only one match to Jacob Carr. This was therefore a "virtual final" and made for an exciting conclusion to what had been a sporting and friendly competition. The match was won by Samantha 7-4, 6-7, 7-4, leaving both she and Derek on 5 wins each. On applying the "who beat whom" rule, Samantha took the trophy donated by Tim King and the prize money courtesy of Chris Sheen of Musk's Ltd.

Saturday was warm and sunny with the odd shower and Sunday was dry, cool and cloudy. Lawns, as usual, were well presented. The format was all play all, best of three, 13 point games, with four rounds on Saturday and three on Sunday. With only seven of the 21 matches going to three games, no double banking and the good weather, there was no time pressure.
