Swiss CA beat English CA 9-6 at Cheltenham

18 Jul 2001 (International)

A three man Swiss team, weakened by the absence of that well-known "Swiss", Cheltenham (and CERN) CC member Andrew Cowing, lead from the start against an England Select team at Cheltenham over the weekend of 23rd-24th June, eventually winning the match by 9 wins to 6 (+33 net points), despite the sterling efforts of England's number four, Hoopmeister Tal Golesworthy, who beat Ian Sexton and Peter Payne (respectively Swiss numbers one and two) in his singles.

The quality of the croquet was possibly surpassed by both the quality and the quantity of the culinary delights prepared by the Cheltenham CC stalwarts at lunchtime and in the excellent local hostelries in the evening. Many thanks to all at Cheltenham CC and also to Peter Darby, the England Select Captain and convenor, for providing such a warm welcome to the travelling Swiss.
