This closely fought semi-final was played at Ashby on Saturday 17th July
on lawns still recovering from the extended dry spell. The morning play
featured a heavy rain storm which seemed to coincide with good breaks by
the Middlesbrough players, and after which they were ahead in all 3
games if somewhat wet. Arthur was for 3 and box v 2 back and peg after
John had pegged out his blue, but managed to hit in twice and play two
breaks to win. Mick also managed to put together a good break which
turned his game around. The doubles match finished as a nail biting +1T
with a break to peg by Tim just before time giving Ashby a one hoop lead.
The afternoon games saw some better weather and excellent controlled
break play from the Middlesbrough pair Phil and Roger who won their
games comprehensively in a short time conceding minimal chances. Mick
eventually got the better of John, leaving 6 players to watch the
entertaining match between Richard and the hard hitting Walter which was
finely balanced until close to the end.
