The weather was kind to croquet players except on Wednesday when it rained for the doubles. Most participants were regulars who have enjoyed this end-of-season tournament several, for some many, times in the past; but it was good to see some new faces: Terrey Sparks and Neil Chambers from Hunstanton, plus our hard-hitting local Craig Oakley was frequently seen retrieving balls from far away. With numbers somewhat diminished there were too few A class players to justify competing for the Ionides Cup so entrants for the singles events were distributed amongst the other three classes, each played as a block - twice over in the case of the Luard Cup which had the smallest entry. The "big handicap" for the Devonshire Park Cup was played as a knock-out throughout the week and won by Ann Jarman for the third time. The Salver block was closely contested with Roger Wood just nosing ahead of Paul Miles and Craig Oakley to achieve his third win. Richard Jackson was a clear winner of the Luard Cup, his second win. Georgeen Hemming played superbly all week to take not only the Trevor Williams Cup, but to share the X doubles win with husband Colin. The Y doubles saw the triumph of Norfolk over Kent.

After a run of 21 years' attendance at South of England events at Compton, the last twelve as manager of the Week, David Magee is standing down so that he and Eileen can take a well deserved croquet-free sabbatical. Both club members and visiting players expressed their huge appreciation of the Magees' contributions to the success and smooth running of this most enjoyable annual get-together, and look forward to seeing them back in Eastbourne before too long.
