4th December 2001 (World Championship)

The 9th WCF World Croquet Championships will be held in Wellington, New Zealand at the Kelburn, Waimarie and Wellington Municipal Croquet Clubs, from 2 to 8 December 2002.

Croquet New Zealand has supported the bid by the Wellington Croquet Association to conduct the event. This will be the first time in the history of the World Championships that the event has been conducted in New Zealand and the second time in the Southern Hemisphere. The Wellington Croquet Association s experience in conducting large scale events will provide the background of expertise necessary to organise and conduct a very successful Championship

The World Croquet Federation, Croquet New Zealand and the Wellington Croquet Association are co-operating to make this event a fitting world croquet championship debut for New Zealand's capital city. There are 16 top class lawns available at the Kelburn, Waimarie and Wellington Municipal Croquet Clubs and other quality lawns will also be used for both the Championships and the preliminary events to cater for the 64 players in the event.

The 64 players will be drawn into 8 blocks of 8 players. The top 4 players in each block will go directly into the best-of- three elimination draw. Losers from the Block event and from nominated elimination draw rounds will proceed into a plate event.

Besides the Kelburn, Waimarie and Wellington Municipal Croquet Clubs other local Clubs are helping to host the event.

The Wellington Croquet Association is receiving support from the Governor-General of New Zealand, Dame Sylvia Cartwright, Patron of Croquet New Zealand and from the Mayor of Wellington, Kerry Prendergast.

The Wellington Croquet Association will be appointing Dr S K Fellows as Director of the Event, supported by an experienced committee drawn from local Clubs and other croquet Associations in New Zealand. Dr G J Roberts has accepted appointment as Tournament Referee, supported by other Senior Referees. The World Croquet Federation is particularly pleased with appointments of Dr Fellows and Dr Roberts as Tournament Officials.

World Croquet Federation President Tony Hall and Secretary-General Gary Fox will attend the event. In conjunction with the event it is proposed to conduct a Council Meeting of the World Croquet Federation. Formal notification of this meeting will be issued to Member Associations in due course.
