Mike Bowser won the Colchester Summer Midweek Handicap

10 Aug 2014 (AC - Handicap)

The oversubscribed Summer Handicap tournament started with 17 players from 11 different clubs. Competitors had travelled from as far as Dorset, Brighton and Lincolnshire and with handicaps ranging from 2 to 18. Fears that the 3 hour time limit may be too short proved unfounded as very few games over the 3 days went to time. Congratulations to all the competitors who played with due expedition.
At the end of the first day Nigel Parkins (hcp 4) and the ever-improving Heather Bennett (10) led the field on 100% with Mike Bowser (3.5) on 3 wins from 4. Previously unstoppable, he was 26ed by the formidable Susan Fulford. Where has she learned all her skills?
The second day had a delayed start following heavy rain but the same competitors continued their push towards the trophy. The evergreen Ron Atkinson continued his excellent form whilst Heather Bennett found the going tough and slipped out of the lead. And so to the final day and the return of hot, humid conditions. Nobody could stop Mike Bowser who was awarded the Rose Bowl having won 8 of his nine games. Nigel Parkins was runner-up having suffered a final game defeat by Peter Kenward (3). Susan Fulford shared third place place with Heather Bennett whom she beat 26-0 in the final game.
As usual the lunches were excellent and the warm welcome to all the visitors added to make the tournament an outstanding success.
