Colin Hemming won the South of England Week A Class

[<<] [>>] by Roger Wood at Compton Croquet Club
27 September 2014 (AC)

Thanks to a welcome sprinkling of late entries joining the band of regulars, the 107th South of England Week at Eastbourne was able to go ahead after earlier fears of cancellation due to lack of support. Manager Colin Hemming deftly rearranged formats to give everyone plenty of games and his own good play was rewarded as clear winner of the A class singles. Compton's Graham Pegley continues to impress with his consistent shooting, allowing him to win the Devonshire Park Salver for the second year running, and to win the handicap doubles with John Williams. Richard Platt, another local, playing in his first tournament, showed great promise
in taking the Luard Cup. The handicap singles, played this year as draw and process, was won by John Swabey visiting from Belgium. The combination of fine croquet weather, excellent catering and competitive play make this a most enjoyable annual occasion and it is fervently to be hoped that more enthusiasts will be attracted to Eastbourne in future years to join us.

Winners:
- Handicap Singles (for the Devonshire Park Cup): John Swabey;
- Handicap Doubles X (for the Anna Millns Salvers) Graham Pegley & John Williams;
- Handicap Doubles Y (for the Gilbert Spoons) John Swabey & Hilary Smith;
- Advanced Singles A (for the Ionides Cup) Colin Hemming;
- Advanced Singles B (for the Devonshire Park Salver) Graham Pegley;
- Advanced Singles C (for the Luard Cup) Richard Platt;
- Consolation Singles (for the Brittain Porringer) Roger Wood.
