On a blustery, dry day, seven intrepid golfers from as far south as Ashby, headed north to the excellent lawns at Middlesbrough to play the Croquet North sponsored GC challenge tournament as part of the Golf Croquet Tournament (National Series). The event were organised based on pre-drawn rounds so that all played all. With hoops set according to regulations, many found the conditions challenging with a number of distance shots rejected by the hoops. The field was well matched and at lunchtime six of the seven players were all on an equal number of wins. Andrew Carpenter claimed the fastest game by beating Mick Haytack in less than 20 minutes.
By the time the sixth round had been played there was a clear winner by the narrowest of margins, but the other placements were all up for grabs, so a seventh round was played to sort out the placings. Placings were calculated based number of wins and then by the number of hoops points scored.
The outcome was :-
Winner - David Widdison 4/6
2nd - Maggie Cowman 4/6
3rd - Gill Brent 4/6
4th - Libby Dixon 3/6
An enjoyable day was had by all.
