Over the weekend of 23rd & 24th April, Sidmouth Croquet Club held its annual Golf Croquet Championship, playing for the Haste Cup. This prestigious tournament attracted 16 top class players from as far afield as Leicester and Sussex.

On Saturday the players played in 2 'American Blocks'. Playing against each player in the block gave all players seven games to play.
On Sunday the top four players in each block took part in a "Play Off" - the Quarter-finals being played in the morning and the Semi-finals and Final in the afternoon. On one court, in the Quarter-finals, Jim Gregory (Nailsea) played Chris Roberts (Henley) and William Ormerod (Swanage) played Andrew Dymomd (Dulwich). On another court Roger Goldring (Henley) played Richard Brooks (Sussex) and Tom Weston (East Dorset) played Tony Forbes (Cheltenham) - all playing the best-of-three games. Two of the matches finished after two games, the other two matches went to a third game.
Chris beat Jim (7-5: 7-3). Andrew beat William (7-4: 4-7: 7-3). Roger beat Richard (2-7: 7-2: 7-6).
and Tom beat Tony (7-3: 7-3)

In the Semi-finals Chris played Andrew and Roger played Tom. Chris beat Andrew in two games
(7-2:7-4), but Tom needed 3 games to beat Roger (6-7:6-5:4-2). This match was not completed in the time allowed, nor with additional time, causing a delay in the start of the Final. The Final was between Chris Roberts (H -1) and Tom Weston (H 1). Both were superb players - especially at clearing balls away from hoops. The result was a win for Chris Roberts, who beat Tom Weston in two games (7-6:7-5) winning the Haste Cup for the second year running. Chris had won eleven games out of the thirteen he had played over the weekend, so was a worthy winner. The match for 3rd & 4th places between Andrew Dymond & Roger Goldring was won by Roger (7-4:7-5).
