GCWTC: Tier 1: Day 2: England bt South Africa 5-1

[<<] [>>] by Dr Ian Vincent at Surbiton
16th May 2016 (World Championship)

The second day of Tier 1 of the World Golf Croquet Teams Championship saw sunny Surbiton at its best. In both blocks the top seeds were playing the bottom ones, and both tests ended 6-0 to the favourites, leaving Egypt and New Zealand undefeated so far.

The interest therefore focused on the 2nd v 3rd seed tests. In Block A, the USA and Ireland drew 3-3, which will result in a play-off being needed if the final tests go to form. In Block B, after losing the top doubles match against South Africa, England recovered strongly, taking the remaining matches to win 5-1. England will therefore join Egypt and New Zealand in the semi-finals, but who they play will depend on tomorrow's results.

The final round of matches in each block, to be played tomorrow (Tuesday), are Egypt v USA and Ireland v Sweden in Block A; and New Zealand v England and South Africa v Wales in the Block B.
