On the penultimate day of tier 1 of the Golf Croquet World Team Championship, being played at Surbiton, two of the four play-off tests for the final positions were decided. England beat Ireland 6-0 with 3 to play in the 3rd/4th place test and, as the light was failing, the USA clinched 5th place by taking a 5-1 lead over Sweden.
In the final itself, New Zealand take a 4-2 lead over Egypt into the second day, with 7 matches remaining. The relegation battle between South Africa and Wales is neck and neck at 3 apiece.
Play starts at 9:30 am tomorrow, Saturday, with a doubles and two singles to be played in all the tests, followed by a further four singles in the final. It is expected that they will start after lunch, with the presentation ceremony late afternoon, but the actual timings will depend on the speed and closeness of the matches.
Spectators are welcome: it is likely to be many years before the world's top two teams play again in this country.
