Andrew Killick won the Middlesbrough B-Level Tournament

26 Jun 2016 (AC)

For our eighth B-level at Albert Park we had ten competitors, five from the home club and the others from Tyneside, Durham and Keswick. It seemed logical to run a cross block (those in Block A playing against each in Block B). The Middlesbrough members were grouped together in Block A and the visitors in Block B. Handicaps were within the range 0.5 to 4,5.

The home Block A comprised Andrew Killick (1), Charles Waterfield (1.5), Dennis Scarr (2), Peter McDermott (3) and Roger Staples (4). Peter had stepped in as a reserve to help make up the numbers.. The away Block B had Phil Errington (.5), Derek Watts (1.5) and Terry Vernazza (3.5), all from Tyneside, John-Paul Moberly (4) from Durham, Ian Hall (4.5) over from Keswick.

After three rounds on the first day and another two on Sunday, the results were as follows:

Killick beat Errington +24, Watts +19, Moberly +3, Vernazza +7, Hall +5
Watts beat Waterfield +14, Scarr +19, McDermott +17, Staples +10
Moberley beat Waterfield +16, McDermott +9, Staples +17
Errington beat McDermott +18, Scarr + 18, Waterfield +21
Hall beat Scarr + 15, Waterfield + 16, McDermott +3
Scarr beat Errington +18, Moberly +17, Vernazza +11
Staples beat Vernazza +14, Hall +14
Vernazza beat McDermott +15
Waterfield beat Vernazza +9

Players agreed that a further 'play-off' round was unnecessary (in view of some home journeys). Net points were used to arrive at some final placings.

Andrew Killick with five wins took 1st place and Derek Watts was runner up (the others as listed in order above).

Andrew, Ian and John-Paul all found their HCs reduced (the latter not for the first time this season!). A very enjoyable weekend, played in good spirits and glorious sun.
