The Bank Holiday class events (August 27 - 29) at the East Dorset club in Poole enjoyed mostly hot weather but rain on Saturday night and light drizzle on Sunday morning made the fast lawns easier.
In the A class Jonathan Powe continued his rapid rise in the rankings by beating Mark Ormerod (winner for the last four years) in his first match. He continued to win all his games to take the Bournemouth Bowl but was fortunate in his last match when Annabel McDiarmid seemed about to finish when her ball just went off.
Second place went to the tournament manager Mike Town who turned his match round after being pegged out by Lionel Tibble with some fantastic long range shooting and a tidy finish although he only feathered his hampered shot after penult.
The B class had problems with the fast lawns and did not complete all the second games on Saturday. Easier conditions on Sunday were welcomed in spite of the damp morning. Most matches were fairly even in spite of the spread of handicaps from one to six and the result was in doubt to the final round when Alan Edwards beat David Williams to catch him on four wins and so pip him to take the Deshon Cup. Heather Bennett also on four wins was unfortunate to miss out on second place but has the satisfaction of a handicap reduction.
