Middlesbrough beat Shrewsbury 4-3

[<<] [>>] by Dennis Scarr at Nottingham CC
8 Jun 2017 (AC - Secretary's Shield)

Middlesbrough and Shrewsbury met in the Secretary's Shield at neutral Nottingham on 8th. June, 2017.

Middlesbrough won the doubles (after an immaculate turn by Roger Staples and a rocky start from Andrew Killick. Then Nigel Roberts won convincingly for Middlesbrough, but just before lunch Alan Smith scored Shrewsbury's first win, making it 2-1 to Middlesbrough.

The afternoon began with Robert Parsons(Shrewsbury) comfortably beating Roger Staples, making it 2-2. But the other match on lawn 1 was hair-raisingly close, with good opportunities missed by both players; finally Sean Sheridan (Shrewsbury) on peg and 1 back pegged out Andrew Killick's ball and shepherded his green ball round (with a few hiccups) to catch up and win 26-25. Just as that game finished, Nigel Roberts (Middlesbrough) came back with his second win of the day, to make the overall score 3-3.

That left the two Julians fighting it out in the deciding game. The word was that Julian Gibson
(Middlesbrough) had reached 4 back with both balls and was a long way ahead; then Julian Remfry (Shrewsbury) from corner 2 hit a double near rover; but a few minutes later it was the Middlesbrough Julian taking his second ball through rover and pegging out.

Many thanks to everyone for an exciting match, played in a friendly spirit, with reasonable weather and the excellent Nottingham lawns."
