Additional WCF U21 GC Championship place awarded to England

Due to a late withdrawal in early June from the WCF U21 GC Championships, an additional place was offered to England, adding to the player awarded a Ranking Place in December and the three players selected for Membership Places in late January.

The GC Selection Committee (GCSC) responded to this offer by referring to the reserve list formulated and prioritised at that time. The first reserve was, unfortunately, unable to take up the vacancy. Accordingly, the second placed player was contacted and the place accepted.

Within a few days of this decision, the Chairman of the Selection Committee received an informal query, conforming to Paragraph 9.2 of the Selection Policy, from the remaining player on the reserve list who had not been considered. This query prompted the GCSC to review whether they had properly executed their duties as defined by the Selection Policy.

This review revealed that the Committee had not considered all information available when they decided who to select from the reserve list. The result was the selection did not comply with paragraph 7.4 of the Policy, which requires the selected player to be one "who will do best in the event". Therefore, the GCSC set aside its previous selection to fill the vacancy and reconsidered the matter.

The parties affected have been duly informed.

New procedures for the monitoring of the progress and ambitions of young GC players by the GCSC are already under consideration

Potential amendments to the selection procedure and also to the appeals procedure have already been drafted and will form part of a thorough review of the policy.

The GCSC sincerely regrets and apologises for the disappointment and difficulties this has caused the deselected player and will follow his GC future playing development with close interest.

Lionel Tibble
Chairman of CA GC Selection Committee
