Roehampton beat Sussex County 5-1

16 May 2021 (AC - Inter-Club)

On a day of blustery showers and brief sunshine Roehampton beat Sussex by 5-1.
The morning doubles saw Sussex's Dominic Nunns and Chris Coull beaten by Harry Fisher and Mark van Loon +19, in sufficient time to start their singles matches before lunch. Playing super advanced, Harry got his first ball round to 10 leaving a standard super leave, before breaking for lunch. Lunch didn't interrupt his rhythm and after Dominic failed to make progress with the contact leave, Harry completed the triple peel +26.

Mark van Loon had an interactive game with Chris Coull but prevailed +11, after Chris missed a shortish roquet with the second ball at hoop 7.

On the other lawn Peter Siddall for Roehampton had a very good day, doggedly beating Paul Castell +2 after Paul lost a winning position by missing penultimate with his second ball. In the afternoon Peter beat Gabrielle Higgins +12 with two good breaks, after Gabrielle had taken her first ball round. She missed a 7 yarder to give Peter his second break and a subsequent missed lift shot gave Peter the game. Peter's handicap came down to 0, for the first time, after a good start to the season.

Paul Castell won a consolation victory for Sussex beating Tim Russell +5, a reward for good play through the day. It looked like being a quick game with Paul round to hoop 10 on the fifth turn, a missed lift shot from Tim and Paul got the balls in good position for a triple but in attempting to get a forward rush out of hoop 5, his croquet shot left himself with an angled hoop which he missed with an attempted jump. Tim got back into the game but Paul hit the final lift shot with Tim on peg and 10 to finish.
