Result Sussex County won 3-2.

Sussex County welcomed their Lake District visitors to the South Coast on a breezy but bright day. Exceptionally, the match was arranged at Southwick between 3 player teams, as a way of combatting the problems of the distance between the clubs, negotiating a neutral venue with a third party and finding a suitable date in what was seemingly an extremely busy period for both teams, with the Crake Valley captain already committed to be at Eastbourne for several days to play in the B level final.

In the morning doubles, David & Sandra Cornes came back from a game down against Tony Jolly & Simon Ancell, to take the decider at the golden hoop. Meanwhile Linda Gavigan had managed to use her handicap advantage to take both games against Frank Sharps at the 13th hoop. A light lunch was taken with the score at 1-1 after two very close matches, giving opportunity to relax a little and enjoy a friendly chat.

In the afternoon session, the first game ended with Tony Jolly holding on to beat David Cornes by 2-0, but within minutes Sandra Cornes had closed out her match with Linda Gavigan also by 2-0, to leave the match score at 2-2.

In the last match Simon Ancell had taken the first game against Frank Sharps, but Frank was fighting back strongly in the second, and at 6-6 the likelihood of a deciding 3rd game was looming, but Simon kept his nerve and managed to win the golden hoop for a 2-0 win, giving Sussex County the match and a place in the final.

After a very close, keenly contested match played in friendly manner, the hosts faced the prospect of a Final against Phyllis Court, while the visitors headed east along the Sussex coast for a long week-end in Eastbourne.
